GÜL’S SECOND STOP IN AFRICA: GABON

President Abdullah Gül, after completing his visit to Ghana, launched his official schedule in Gabon, the second stop as part of his program in Africa. President Gül was welcomed by President Ali Bongo Ondimba with an official ceremony at the Presidential Palace. Having had a tete-a-tete, the two leaders chaired the talks between their delegations. Afterwards, the following agreements were signed between the relative agencies of the two governments: The Intergovernmental Cooperation Agreement, the Intergovernmental Framework Agreement, The Agreement on Lifting the Visa Requirements for Diplomatic Passports; The Memorandum of Understanding on Establishing Political Consultation Mechanisms and the Declaration of Will.

“EDUCATED PEOPLE WILL PAVE THE WAY FOR PROSPERITY”

The President later addressed Turkish and Gabonese businessmen at the Turkey-Gabon Business Forum during which he reiterated: “Africa should close the gap by looking ahead, displaying efforts to develop and making prosperity prevail among people. Educated people will pave the way for production and welfare. Therefore, we also should attach priority to education.”

He further referred to Gabon as the Heaven of Africa with its mesmerizing natural beauties and diverse flora and shared his belief that Gabon will soon reap the benefits of its efforts toward development and stability, underlining the importance of resoluteness and displaying tireless efforts to achieve this.

PRESIDENT ONDIMBA UNDERSCORES TURKEY’S COGENCY

President Ali Bongo Ondimba of Gabon also delivered a speech during the business forum and accentuated Turkey’s credibility, exclaiming: “We can serve the whole of Africa with a cogent country like Turkey!” He further urged Turkish businessmen to invest in his country, informing them that they grant foreign investors with a ten-year tax exemption.

After the Turkey-Gabon Business Forum he attended along with his Gabonese counterpart, President Gül visited the Turkish International School and watched the performances by a group of students upon his arrival. The best example of the current cooperation in education between the two countries is the Turkish International School, opened in 2008, he further promulgated and predicted great achievements for the school in the near future. The foundations of the Turkish-Gabonese cooperation, he said, have been laid in such institutions and predicted that this school will greatly contribute to the amicable relations between the two countries in the future.

Offering his thanks to the Gabonese officials for their corroboration for the Turkish school in Gabon, the President also thanked the Turkish teachers and their spouses who came all the way from Turkey and to the Turkish businessmen who have lent their support for such schools, exclaiming: “I am proud to see the Turkish and Gabonese flags flapping side by side!”

President Gül later presented school reports to some students due to the last day of the educational season and had a memoir photo taken with them.

The President, after attending the official dinner given by President Ondimba, returned to Turkey.

Brief History: Discovered by Portuguese sailors in the 15th century, Gabon was colonized by the French in 1885 and was made a part of the French Equatorial Africa in 1910. After the proclamation of autonomy in 1958, the country gained her independence in 1960. Albert-Bernard Bongo, becoming the second president in 1967 after Leon Mba’s death, converted to Islam in 1973 and chose Omar as his new name. He held his Office until 2009.
