“Israel must stop its assaults on Gaza without delay”

Making a statement as to the recent Israeli attacks on Gaza after he had performed the Friday Prayer at Hasan Tanık Mosque in Ankara, President Gül underscored: “I’m calling on Israel to stop its assaults on Gaza. Furthermore, we see that Israel is preparing for a land operation. I’m firmly warning that such an action must not be resorted to.”

President Abdullah Gül, after performing the Friday Prayer at Hasan Tanık Mosque, made a statement about the recent Israeli attacks on Gaza. “Unfortunately, in this holy month of Ramadan, there are ongoing agonies, bloodshed and civil wars in some Islamic countries including Syria and Iraq. We are really saddened by this situation of the Islamic world. To make it worse, Israel is bombing Palestine from the land and the sea before the very eyes of the world, killing people. I regard this as a really dangerous development and I’m calling for an end to these attacks without delay. Furthermore, we see that Israel is preparing for a land operation. I’m firmly warning that such an action must not be resorted to because such an operation would lead to more dangerous developments, sowing the seeds of hatred and animosity among the countries in the region. This situation might create endless chaos in our region. I’m calling on the regional countries, the UN and all the international organizations to engage in a close cooperation and consultation. The international community must also make every effort to stop these attacks and the ongoing clashes in Iraq and Syria as well.”

Question: “Mr. President, the event that started the deterioration of Turkish-Israeli relations happened when Israel attacked on Gaza in 2008. Do you see any normalization between the two countries despite these recent assaults?”

President Gül: “First of all, these attacks must be stopped. As I underscored, they sow the seeds of enmity and hatred and might lead to an irreversible chaos. Therefore, these attacks must end without delay and Israel must never launch an land operation. Our vision is that a peace process must be initiated on the basis of the fact that the two states can live side by side.”
