President Gül Evaluates the Agenda

President Abdullah Gül, during his domestic visit to the city of Tekirdağ, responded to queries from the press about the agenda.

President Gül shared his evaluations as to the agenda including the upcoming presidential elections in the country and the ongoing events in Mosul.

PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS

“We will be holding the presidential elections in August during which the people will elect president for the first time. The responsibilities and authority of the president remain unchanged, but the election system has been altered in this way. Pluralism is our richness in this process indeed. Candidates will all be declared soon, of course. As per the constitution, I have to keep my objective stance which is beyond political parties. On the other hand, I am among the founders of the governing AK Party. My firends and I, therefore, will evaluate all these issues, but today as I’m the current President, I have a stance beyond politics. What we should do now is to hold the presidential elections in a way that befits Turkey’s democracy, to consolidate and strengthen our union and solidarity and to demonstrate that Turkey is a safe haven in the region while these extraordinary events are occuring around us.”

RECENT EVENTS IN MOSUL

“Very saddening events are occuring in our region including Iraq unfortunately. Cities are being devastated in Syria and the current incidents in Iraq are turning into a sectarian clash. These are all making us all very sad indeed. We are also very sad that the image of Islam is being negatively influenced by these events. On the contrary, Islam teaches that killing a person unfairly is like killing all people. We are making tireless efforts so that these events do not deepen and in order to rescue the staff of our consulate in Mosul. We will continue to cooperate with the international community so that the fire in our region can be extinguished.”
