“President Rouhani’s visit will open a new chapter in our bilateral relations”

President Gül, responding to a query from the press at the end of the joint news conference he held with President Rouhani, pointed to the huge trade and investment opportunities that should be seized by both countries, underscoring that Iran, according to the policies pursued under the leadership of President Rouhani, attaches great importance to opening to the world economically, to the private sector’s active roles and to the implementation of more competitive and effective economic policies as well.

President Abdullah Gül responded to a query from the press at the end of the joint news conference he held with President Hassan Rouhani of Iran at the Çankaya Presidential Palace.

Question: Mr. President, a broad delegation is accompanying President Rouhani on his state visit to Turkey. You have carried out several talks and tomorrow a joint strategic cooperation council and a meeting with business leaders will be held as well. Can we say that all these demonstrate a new chapter will be opened in the bilateral relations between Turkey and Iran?

President Gül: “I would like to say ‘yes’ to this question. As you said, President Rouhani is being accompanied by a broad delegation including Ministers and business leaders. We want to seize the existing great potential between the two countries. Take Germany and France; these two countries, despite the many similarities they have, enjoy huge investments in each other. The same can apply to Turkey and Iran as well in terms of the trade and investment opportunities. Iran, according to the policies pursued under the leadership of President Rouhani, attaches great importance to opening to the world economically, to the private sector’s active roles and to the implementation of more competitive and effective economic policies as well. As part of this, there are many areas where Turkey and Iran can conduct business mutually. It is of great importance that we put into practice the agreements we have signed. In this regard, I believe that this visit will serve as a turning point in our relations. This time, I can see that we will be able to start reaping the benefits of these agreements and the promises we have made to each other. As for our political relations, we are in close consultations. Both countries wish that the ongoing agonies and sorrows in the region end. We have the necessary will toward this. The efforts demonstrated by Turkey and Iran in this regard will make great contributions to the resolution of this issue. Therefore, I believe that this state visit by President Rouhani will be a turning point in this regard as well.”
