Visiting the county of Soma where the mine disaster occured, President Gül said the whole nation is faced with a grave calamity and extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the mine workers who lost their lives in the explosion.

President Abdullah Gül inspected the Soma region where the mine explosion occured.

THE WHOLE NATION IN GRIEF

After visiting the mine workers, who were injured during the mine explosion, at the Akhisar State Hospital, President Gül accompanied by Speaker Cemil Çiçek of the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) proceeded to the county of Soma, where he inspected the rescue work being carried out in the mine area.

Delivering a speech after that, President Gül said that the nation as a whole is faced with a grave calamity, adding: “May Allah’s mercy be upon all our citizens losing their lives in this disaster. I am extending my heartfelt condolences to their families. I believe that working in mines underground to earn their daily bread for their households is one of the most honrable jobs. The state with all its relevant institutions is doing their best to rescue the trapped workers. However, our loss is very big, unfortunately.

“WE MUST BE IN AN UNSHAKEN SOLIDARITY”

The President continued as follows: “We all share the same grief today. We must keep our union and solidarity to heal our wounds. I’m sure our nation will demonstrate this solidarity. Our friends from the four corners of the world have sent their condolences to us. I hereby offer my thanks to them. We also must review the existing rules regarding the mining work and take the necessary precautions as the developed countries have done. The State Supervisory Council of the Presidency will have suggestions about that. The necessary investigations into this event have been launched. It is crucial that we learn from this tragic incident and that we not go through a similar one again.”
