MGK April Meeting Held

 

President Abdullah Gül chaired the National Security Council (MGK) meeting held at the Çankaya Presidential Palace. The MGK members discussed the issues that concern peace of the people and the security of the country and reviewed the measures taken against the organizations that threaten the national security of the country. They also exchanged views on the recent events in the Middle East including Syria, the death penalty verdicts in Egypt, the reconciliation process in Palestine and the Russian-Ukrainian crisis.

The April meeting of the National Security Council (MGK) was held under the chairmanship of President Abdullah Gül at the Çankaya Presidential Palace.

The Secretariat General of the MGK issued a statement following the meeting which noted that the members discussed the issues that concern peace of the public and the security of the country as well as reviewed the measures taken against the organizations threatening the national security of Turkey.

SYRIA AND SYRIAN REFUGEES IN TURKEY

The Secretariat General also said that the members comprehensively discussed the threat that the current atmosphere of clashes in Syria poses against the national security of Turkey as well as the regional peace and stability. They also reviewed the studies being carried out in order to meet the needs of the Syrian refugees staying in Turkey.

CURRENT INCIDENTS IN THE MIDDLE EAST AND PALESTINE

Evaluating the current situation in the Middle East, the MGK members further reviewed the bilateral relations between Turkey and Iraq in all areas, stated the MGK Secretariat General, reiterating that the resolution of the existing problems in that country within the democratic and constitutional framework will have an affirmative influence upon the stability and peace in Iraq and the whole region. The members, it noted, further assessed the current level of the negotiations being conducted between Israel and Palestine and expressed their pleasure at the agreement reached between Hamas and Fatah toward the achievement of unity among the Palestinians, which is crucial for a permanent and sustainable peace in the region.

"The members of the MGK further exchanged views on the current events in Egypt and evinced their concern about the capital punishment verdicts made in that country, sharing their expectation that these decisions will not be applied for the sake of the future of the people of Egypt, which is Turkey's sister country."

CRIMEAN TATAR PEOPLE AND RUSSIAN-UKRAINIAN CRISIS

The statement issued by the MGK Secretariat General further emphasized that the council members discussed in detail the current situation emerging with the crisis between the Russian Federation and Ukraine and said they also evaluated the possible ramifications of the existing and potential developments in Turkey and the effects of these developments on the Crimean Tatar people.

The members, the Secretariat General added, were informed about the studies being carried out regarding the Defense Reform, initiated with the order of President Abdullah Gül according to the developments in the regional and global security atmosphere.
