President Gül Discusses Events in Crimea with Academicians at Çankaya Table

President Abdullah Gül, carrying on the Çankaya Table tradition which was initiated by Atatürk, hosted scholars and historians at the Çankaya Presidential Palace as part of the theme entitled “Crimea from Past to Present”

President Abdullah Gül hosted scholars and historians at the Çankaya Presidential Palace as part of the tradition of the Çankaya Table, at which he exchanged views with his guests on Crimea and the situation of the Tatar people.

Having been informed by the officials about the unfolding incidents in Crimea, President Gül listened to the evaluations of the academicians, who are experts on Crimean history, regarding the historical background of the events. The scholars recalled that Crimea was entirely a Turkic Tatar region before the 18th century and that these communities have continued to live there since. President Gül and his guests emphasized the importance that the existence of the Tatar people in the region be taken into consideration in every way today and in the future as well.

Attending the luncheon at the Çankaya Table were Undersecretary Feridun Sinirlioğlu of the Foreign Ministry; Prof. Dr. İlber Ortaylı of Galatasaray University; Prof. Dr. Yücel Öztürk of Sakarya University; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hakan Kırımlı of Bilkent University; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayşegül Aydıngün of METU; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nuri Kavak of Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University; and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Fehmi Yılmaz of Istanbul Medeniyet University.

Secretary General Mustafa İsen and Chief of Cabinet Koray Ertaş of the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey were also present at the Çankaya Table.

President Abdullah Gül resumed the Çankaya Table tradition in 2008, when he met with the two Turkish intellectuals, Prof. Dr. Talat Halman and Prof. Dr. Halil İnalcık. The President, as part of this tradition, had lunch with representatives of the world of science to discuss the future of science in Turkey last year.
