President Gül Evaluates Domestic Affairs

Following the joint press conference he held with President Kenyatta of Kenya, President Gül responded to queries from the press as to the upcoming presidential elections in the country and the future of Turkish-Kenyan bilateral relations.

President Abdullah Gül, after the joint news conference he held with President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya, responded to queries from the press.

Question: Mr. President, you have said that it is time to tals about your candidacy for president for the upcoming elections. Will you discuss this during your meeting with the Prime Minister this week? A Bayburt option is said to be considered. Would you prefer this option or an early parliamentary election?

President Gül: “Well, there are only 4-5 months remaining for the presidential elections, so it is time to discuss it of course. We should have a realistic approach in this regard. We will exchange our views on this issue with my friends including the Prime Minister and we will together draw a road map for that, but in the end, what I will say about my candidacy is important at the end of this process.”

Q: What steps will be taken in terms of the future of Turkish-Kenyan relations? What kind of a cooperation will be seen especially regarding the security and energy areas? Are incentives going to be granted for Turkish investments in Kenya?

President Gül: “The economic dimension of the relationship between the two countries serve as one of the most important sides of our relations with Kenya. We attach utmost significance to this indeed. My Kenyan counterpart will attend a business forum as well. The cooperation agreements we have signed today will provide the necessary opportunities for our business leaders to boost their investments in Kenya. President Kenyatta himself strongly urges Turkish investors to do that in his country.”
