President Gül Highlights Strong Friendship Which the Turkish and the Polish Peoples Enjoy



President Abdullah Gül and President Bronislaw Komorowski of Poland held a joint news conference at the Çankaya Presidential Palace. President Gül, during his speech, pointed out that his Polish counterpart’s state visit to Turkey coincides with the 600th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, saying: “The relations that Turkey and Poland enjoy are continuing to gain strength to carry this friendship - which dates back 600 years - to the next generations.”

600-YEAR-LONG FELLOWSHIP

Evincing his pleasure at welcoming President Komorowski to Turkey, President Gül said that his Polish counterpart’s state visit to Turkey coincides with the 600th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, noting that “the friendship between the Turkish and the Polish people that started in 1414 is gaining strength each day. I think very few countries have so good a fellowship as that which Turkey and Poland enjoy.”

President Gül, informing his audience that many activities to be held on the occasion of President Komorowski’s visit to Turkey, said the existing relations Turkey and Poland enjoy are continuing to gain strength to carry this friendship -which dates back 600 years - to the next generations. Turkey and Poland, he noted, are two allies in NATO and said they are in close cooperation in all areas.

POLISH SUPPORT FOR TURKEY’S ACCESSION PROCESS TO THE EU

The President further informed the press members that he and his counterpart had reviewed the bilateral relations between Turkey and Poland and exchanged views on the recent developments that concern both countries. He also reiterated that they have reaffirmed their will to boost the existing trade relations Turkey and Poland enjoy. “We will encourage our business leaders and investors in this regard. There is huge potential in the defense industry and tourism sector.” The President then underscored that Poland supports Turkey in its negotiation process on the path toward the EU and said he had offered his thanks to the Polish administration for this support. “I also shared my views with President Komorowski that the chapters on judiciary, basic rights, energy, foreign security and defense policies must be opened as part of Turkey’s negotiation process and that there is no possible explanation for not opening these chapters. President Komorowski agreed with me on that. After all, Poland always demonstrates its support for Turkey in the Group of Turkey’s Friends. We are sure that this support will continue.”

IMPORTANCE OF SOVEREIGNTY AND TERRITORIAL INTEGRITY OF UKRAINE

The President further pointed to the current developments in Ukraine and underscored the importance that Ukraine’s sovereignty should be protected without harming its political and territorial integrity and that the tension in the Crimea should be overcome through peaceful means.”

QUINTESSENTIAL RELATIONS BETWEEN TURKEY AND POLAND

As for President Komorowski, he shared his happiness to be visiting Turkey on the 600th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Turkey and Poland, declaring Turkish-Polish relations to be unmatched in European history. He further expressed his pleasure that both countries share the same approach regarding the events in Ukraine.

AGREEMENTS SIGNED

Prior to the joint press conference, the following agreements were signed between the relevant departments of the two countries:

Cooperation Protocol between the Public Administration Institute for Turkey and the Middle East and Poland’s National School of Public Administration; Memorandum of Understanding between Turkey’s Ministry for EU Affairs and Poland’s National School of Public Administration; Cooperation Protocol between TRT and Polish Radio and Cooperation Protocol between TRT and Polish Television.
