MGK February Meeting Held at the Çankaya Presidential Palace

 

During the National Security Council (MGK) meeting, the members of the Council evaluated the activities that concern the security of the country and the studies that are being carried out in this regard as well as the organizations and activities that threaten the national security and peace of the people. They further discussed in detail the influences of the recent developments in the Middle East and North Africa in general, and Syria, Iraq and Iran in particular on the region. 

President Abdullah Gül chaired the MGK February meeting  held at the Çankaya Presidential Palace. 

The Secretariat General of the MGK issued a written statement which said the members of the Council evaluated the activities that concern the security of the country and the studies that are being carried out in this regard as well as the organizations and activities that threaten the national security and peace of the people. “The necessary measures that should be taken so that the upcoming municipal elections could be held safely and peacefully were also discussed,” added the Secretariat General. 

The stament further noted that the Council members also discussed the security problem that the ongoing events in Syria pose as well as the activities being conducted as part of this problem. “The members reiterated the cruciality that the clashes in that country should be ended as per the legitimate demands and expectations  of the people. They also evaluated the efforts which are being shown for this purpose. Furthermore, the members were informed about both the current situation of the Syrian refugees in Turkey who number more than 700.000, and the studies which are being carried out to meet the needs of these people.” 

The Secretariat General of the MGK also noted that the members discussed the influences of the Middle East and North Africa on Turkey and the region. As part of this, it said, the development achieved in terms of Turkish-Iranian bilateral relations as well as the current situation in Iraq were assessed, adding that the resolution of the problems in Iraq will contribute to the stability and peace of Iraq and the whole region.
